Woman Wins Top Honors for Losing 73 Pounds in Year-Long Internet-Based Weight Loss Study
24 January 2006 Jayme Goffin of Crown Point has been awarded $5,000 for being the top student in a year-long Internet-based weight loss study. Over the year Goffin lost 73 pounds and 30 percent of her body weight. Goffin, a 43-year old homemaker, along with 20 other women and 11 men, enrolled in the weight loss study using a program called the Leanness Lifestyle developed by David Greenwalt, a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist and 23-year veteran fitness expert. See http://www.leannesslifestyle.com . "When I first started I just wanted to lose some weight and stop failing at trying," Goffin says. "I had started and failed so many times I had almost given up." Although scant data exists, published research indicates the gold standard for weight loss at the one-year mark lies between 8 and 10 percent of starting body weight. Greenwalt says his program resulted in participants losing, on average, 11 percent of their respective starting body weight. This occurred despite the fact that 14 people were excluded for failing to maintain accurate records. "We don't just give people information and hope they will follow it," said Greenwalt. "Research is clear in this area. It doesn't work. My program, although entirely online with the exception of tele-classes, provides structure and ease to food and activity tracking, personalized feedback, accountability and lifestyle management." Greenwalt considers his study significant because few commercial- and Internet-based weight-loss programs have ever submitted themselves for critical review -- especially when the review asks for data of those who followed the program longer than a few weeks. Until recently, with the exception of Weight Watchers, no commercial program had published reliable data from randomized trials showing that people who participated weighed less a few months later than people who did not participate.
