Wellington hosts major Internet conference

Surf s up -- Wellington hosts major Internet conference

More than 700 people and representatives from 90governments will be 'surfing in Wellington next month asthe city hosts a major international conference on theInternet.

Communications Minister David Cunliffe andWellington s Mayor Kerry Prendergast today announced theICANN Wellington conference by straddling surfboards. (Seephoto op details below)

ICANN is the InternetCorporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, a non-profitinternational organisation that oversees much of theInternet's operations.

The March 27-31 conference is thefirst time an ICANN meeting has been held in New Zealand.Considerable interest will attach to a United Nations-ledpush to create a separate organisation to ICANN to providegovernance of Internet issues such as spam, cyber-crime andidentity theft.

David Cunliffe said the government wascommitted to economic transformation. Better ICT wasfundamental to that strategy and funding had been providedto help bring the ICANN conference to New Zealand.

"Thegovernment s Digital Strategy is now giving seed funding toencourage the rest of the country to match the broadbandinfrastructure which has helped Wellington become knowninternationally as a vibrant, creative and connectedcity."

Mr Cunliffe will attend the conference s openingceremony. He will meet ICANN chair, Vint Cerf, aninternational ambassador for Google, who is regarded as the'father of the Internet. Mr Cerf will also visit WetaDigital while he is in Wellington.

Kerry Prendergast saidWellington is best placed to host an ICANN conferencebecause the CityLink broadband cable and wireless network isamong the best in the world.

"Wellington City Council wasinstrumental in getting CityLink off the ground. That s nowpaying dividends, with several hundred foreign visitors herefor a week and international media attention."

Organisingthe conference is InternetNZ, the non-profit organisationthat manages the .nz domain name. Executive director KeithDavidson said InternetNZ was delighted to have secured sucha large conference for Wellington. He said it would providean opportunity to showcase the initiative of CityLink andthe city council in making Wellington one of the world slongest-established open access high-speed broadbandnetworks.

"Just about all of the 700 delegates will have alaptop and will need constant, rapid connections tocountries all over the world. Because of the CityLink scable and wireless network, we can deliver that."

MrDavidson says the conference will provide some internationalperspectives about the rest of New Zealand s woeful recordon broadband connectivity and the failure to unbundleTelecom s copper wire network to wide competition.

ICANN smandate is to ensure the cohesion and coordination of theInternet s core function for resolving issues about domainnames and numbers. The Wellington conference agenda includessome thorny topics, including decisions on whether toauthorise the creation of .xxx, a top-level domain name forpornography.
