Webmail.us Brings RSS to the Inbox
18 August 2005Webmail.us, the leading provider of email hosting services to small and geographically dispersed businesses, today unveiled the integration of an RSS reader into its email hosting platform. The RSS reader seamlessly integrates with webmail and can be configured to work with any POP3 or IMAP-based desktop email client, such as Microsoft Outlook and Mozilla Thunderbird. An industry first, the Webmail.us RSS reader was built with the small business in mind. In addition to integrating with email, the reader enables email administrators to optionally regulate RSS feeds and pre-subscribe feeds for their users.
While there are hundreds of RSS readers available for download, Webmail.us does not require a download or installation. Much like its hosted email service, there is no software to download and no hardware to manage. This is because its RSS reader intelligently converts RSS feeds to email messages on the backend, allowing any POP3 or IMAP-based desktop email client to receive them. In other words, it works just like email—and, just like email, business users can now use their preferred email client to manage content gathered from blogs, news and business-related sources.
“Combining RSS and email lowers the technology learning curve,” said Pat Matthews, chief executive officer at Webmail.us. “People know how to use email—now they will know how to use RSS, sometimes without even realizing it. Likewise, some businesses don't want their users freely subscribing to RSS feeds, just as they don't want them freely surfing the Internet. We provide them with the option of adopting RSS according to their unique business needs,” said Matthews.
RSS, short for “really simple syndication,” is a format for content syndication that allows publishers to easily syndicate content across the web. Several major news sites are now publishing their content via RSS and the technology has helped to spur the rise of the millions of bloggers who now freely publish content daily. RSS readers allow users to subscribe to feeds of interest; when a new feed is posted, that feed is automatically delivered to the RSS reader. Unlike traditional email newsletters, however, RSS readers put users in control of their subscriptions, as users do not need to provide any personal information, like an email address, in order to subscribe.
Webmail.us, along with its growing list of private-label reseller partners, provides more than 7,000 small and geographically dispersed businesses with enterprise-class email hosting protected from spam, computer viruses and other security threats facing corporate email systems. The company manages and maintains this critical communications infrastructure, freeing up personnel resources and eliminating the need for organizations to purchase email-related hardware, software and security services—all for a fraction of the cost of purchasing and managing the solution in-house. The email hosting platform is housed in carrier-grade data centers, to ensure maximum uptime. Webmail.us also goes to great lengths to ensure its customers' privacy—promising not to sell customer data or advertise to them –key reasons for being awarded the TRUSTe privacy seal.
