Waitakere Online supports Govt s internet review
12 February 2006 Media release February 9, 2006 Waitakere Onlinesupports Government s internet review Waitakere Online, anonline community for Waitakere City residents andbusinesses, supports plans to review regulation of internetproviders. The board of Waitakere Online yesterdayunanimously endorsed the fast implementation of broadband askey to increasing economic activity in the region. Thisfollows news that Communications Minister David Cunliffe isreviewing internet regulations and will have a decision bythe middle of the year. The Waitakere Online portalprovides a technological window into hundreds of localbusinesses, community organisations and services inWaitakere City. Waitakere Online was established in 2004 aspart of Waitakere City s Digital City strategy to providetimely content to its community. A key part of the strategyis the ability for all residents, businesses and communitiesin Waitakere City, to have access to a broadband connection. "We welcome the fact the Government acknowledges there isroom for improvement in the speed of access to the internet. It s essential everyone who wishes to can get online as fastand as cheaply as anyone else in the OECD," says WaitakereCity Councillor Linda Cooper, a member of the WaitakereOnline editorial board. "Currently, New Zealand ranksnear the bottom of the OECD countries for broadbandadoption. Rural communities such as Karekare, Laingholm andParau and even parts of more urban areas such as WestHarbour cannot receive access to broadband due to oldtechnology. Until there is more action to improve thisaccess we cannot fully become a Digital City," saysCouncillor Cooper. Waitakere business leader Ken Stevens,Executive Chairman of Glidepath Ltd, a baggage handlingsystems company, also supports the Government s focus oninternet speed. "In the ultra competitive businessenvironment in Asia, our key market, we can only compete byusing email. The huge files we send to multiple addressesmean we need to be assured of a fast broadband service, orbe out of business within 12 months. Comparatively, when wevisit our Dallas Texas manufacturing unit, we note theirelectronic file transfer is many times faster than ours inNew Zealand, resulting in increased efficiency andprofessionalism," says Mr. Stevens. According to a recentWaitakere City Council survey (August 2005), more than 23percent of Waitakere households have a Broadband Internetconnection. This is above the national average but is stilllow by international standards. This same survey found 51percent of businesses in Waitakere have access to aBroadband connection however it is not clear what the speedand capacity of these connections are. To fill in thesegaps the Waitakere Online Editorial Board is planning asurvey to discover how Waitakere City s residents use theinternet and what they want in the future.
