USA For Innovation Supports Federal Court Ruling in Favor of Internet Search Caching
29 January 2006 USA For Innovation applauds the recent ruling by Judge Robert Jones of the U.S. District Court in Nevada affirming the common internet search tool practice of caching the content of the world wide web to facilitate searches and access to information.
Finding the practice in accordance with the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, Judge Jones' finding lifts a burden of uncertainty from some of America's fastest-growing innovators and businesses including Google, Yahoo! and others.
The ruling is also relevant to the debate over Google's Book Search tool, allowing users to search for specific key words within the text of potentially millions of texts. Judge Jones found that cached information falls within the "fair use" definition of the U.S. Copyright Act which provides for limited use of copyrighted material for teaching and research.
