Two Is Better Than One: In Pursuit of a Better Search
26 January 2006 With a traditional search engine, keywords equal mass delivery of matched results. With the new Dumbfind.com search engine launched today, a keyword plus a related category produces search results that can't be found anywhere else. The engine's two-box search method empowers searches in a new way by combining traditional keywords with topics or categories. Before results are served up to users, the Dumbfind engine sorts its findings into related tag clusters so they can be more intelligently ranked to match the searcher's real intent. "We designed Dumbfind for those looking for a better and alternative search method to what the traditional mass engines like Google, Yahoo, Microsoft's MSN or even Ask Jeeves or Clusty are offering," says Chris Seline, Dumbfounder and President. "Whether you're a power searcher or just frustrated with the limitations of unilateral keyword searches, Dumbfind offers you an efficient, intuition-guided search experience." The key difference between Dumbfind's two-box search method and that of keyword searches are the targeted results. "With the leading traditional keyword search engine, if you put in the word 'opera' for example, you'll get 393,000,000 hits in .07 seconds. But who has the time to sift through more than 300 million results to find the relevant four internet sites that will provide the answers you're looking for?" questions Seline. "Plus, since the search engine doesn't offer the searcher the ability to choose what topics or categories the search is relevant to, the results will range from Opera web browser to musical operas. "With Dumbfind, if searchers want to find answers about musical opera, they could enter the word 'opera' in the first keyword search box and plug in 'music' for the second category box and obtain results quickly that are more relevant to what they're looking for than by just searching by keyword. Dumbfind provides more options and flexibility. If searchers are inclined to put more intuition into their search, we also give them that opportunity." According to Seline, even if searchers did input multiple words in the keyword box of a traditional search engine, the findings are still not as definitive and efficient for the user to page through than if they were given the option to also search by category. The Dumbfind technology affording searchers this benefit is the combination of keywords with related tag clusters. While traditional tagging refers to the brief phrase that encapsulates a web site's purpose or marketing message, related tag clustering differs in that it collects a number of different 'tags' or non-definitive interpretations about web sites and groups them together. When plugged into an engine like Dumbfind, users will find search results that are highly relevant but not limited in scope. This avoids all of the top results spewed out on the first several pages of traditional search engines and provides clearer and more useful findings to the searcher. If users don't know what tag to apply to their search, they can do a regular keyword search on Dumbfind. The results will list findings similar to those found on other search engines. However, to the left of those findings under the "related tag clusters" section, Dumbfind guides searchers by offering suggestions on related tags that could be relevant to their search. In the near future, Dumbfind will also incorporate folksonomy and tagsonomy technologies to create an online community where users can submit and tag content to help determine search relevancy and discover new sites. About Dumbfind Dumbfind goes above and beyond traditional search engines by acting as a guide in the query refinement process. When you can't find what you are looking for, Dumbfind will present suggestions on which direction to turn. Founded in 2003 by Johns Hopkins graduate Chris Seline, Dumbfind has a rapidly growing user-base. Dumbfind is headquartered in Washington, DC.
