TELEHOUSE & the London Internet Exchange Forge Transatlantic Deal Linking Three Leading Internet Exchanges
1 January 2006 Three of the world's most influential Internet exchanges are to co-operate on a program to improve international Internet operations -- leading to potential benefits for ISPs and their customers across the globe.
TELEHOUSE America, which operates The New York Internet Exchange (NYIIX) and The Los Angeles Internet Exchange (LAIIX), and is the leading provider of collocation facilities, and The London Internet Exchange (LINX) have signed an agreement under which they will work jointly to promote connections between their members and customers.
Internet exchanges enable ISPs and content delivery providers to exchange traffic between their networks. The process -- known as 'peering' -- allows customers of one exchange member to send and receive data from customers of other members.
NYIIX is operated by TELEHOUSE out of its BROADWAY Center at 25 Broadway ("25B") in Manhattan, New York. NYIIX (www.NYIIX.net) is the largest neutral Internet exchange point in the metro New York region and one of the largest in the US. Its peak traffic volume current runs at 16Gbps. TELEHOUSE operates LAIIX out of its LOS ANGELES Center at 626 Wilshire Blvd. ("626W") in downtown Los Angeles. LAIIX (www.LAIIX.net) also is directly connected via dark fiber to LA's 1 Wilshire Boulevard carrier hotel. Peak traffic at the exchange is around 1 Gbit/sec.

LINX is one of the largest and best-connected Internet exchanges in the world. It handles in excess of 100 Gbit/sec of traffic at peak times and provides ISPs with direct access to around half the world's Internet routes.
LINX sales and marketing manager Vanessa Evans said: "The agreement with TELEHOUSE allows members of LINX, LAIIX and NYIIX -- as well as customers at other TELEHOUSE facilities in the USA -- to take advantage of new peering opportunities and grow their global networks."
Michael Vallone, head of marketing at TELEHOUSE America, said: "By working together with our customers and members we can strengthen international networks, reducing costs and increasing network resilience for Internet users on both sides of the Atlantic."
"We will be exploring various ways in which we can use the relationship between LINX and TELEHOUSE to facilitate the growth of the three exchanges by providing additional value to our members."
About TELEHOUSE
TELEHOUSE America is a carrier-neutral collocation space and services pioneer. Since 1989, they have provided secure, power-protected environments where customers can house and operate their telecommunications and network resources. Companies from a wide range of industries locate their mission critical equipment at TELEHOUSE's collocation "meet-me-centers" in NY or CA to profit from the potential business opportunities that exist from other TELEHOUSE customers. Among the many benefits of collocating with TELEHOUSE is the ability to connect to state-of-the-art peering exchanges in New York (NYIIX; http://www.nyiix.net/) and Los Angeles (LAIIX; http://www.laiix.net/). Through close ties to its European and Asian sister companies, TELEHOUSE also can provide continuous, cost-effective operation of network-dependent businesses globally. About the London Internet Exchange - LINX
LINX is the world's largest Internet exchange point (IXP). It is a mutual, not-for-profit organisation whose members include almost all the major UK Internet service providers and content delivery service providers, plus many from the USA, mainland Europe, the Far East and Africa. The LINX infrastructure allows members rapidly and cost-effectively to exchange data between their networks. More than half of the world's Internet routes are accessible from LINX, which currently handles more than 90 per cent of UK Internet traffic. Peak traffic flows at LINX are more than 100 gigabits of data per second. One gigabit is 1,000 million bits of data. While Internet traffic consists of a wide variety of data (such as website downloads and business data), one gigabit is roughly equivalent to 60,000 average e-mail messages. The connection of ISPs' networks at an exchange point such as LINX is known as peering. For more information, go to http://www.linx.net
