Symbium launches powerful new server management system
23 April 2005After almost three years in product research and development, Symbium Corporation, a developer and supplier of advanced information technology (IT) management products, today announced the launch of its flagship product, the Intelligent Secure Autonomic Controller (ISAC). Combining proven high availability telecommunications fundamentals with autonomic computing principles, Symbium has created the world's first plug-and-play, automated server control system. Customers are reporting increases in the availability, performance and security of servers and their applications.
"Telecom systems have had an enviable history of high availability and performance versus the IT world. Based on our experience, we believed we could produce a solution for IT using the same principles, and we have," said Ben Robitaille, president and CEO, Symbium. "With ISAC, Symbium is offering a new generation of automated IT management capabilities that, based on industry and our own customer research, can reduce labor costs and application downtime by as much as 50%."
ISAC features a policy-based software engine that performs automated management of host servers, operating systems and applications. Operating out -of band (that is, independently of the host server's hardware and software, regardless of their operating state), the software engine runs on an embedded plug-and-play computer that goes into an open PCI or PCI-X slot on the host server, much like a traditional network or video card.
Out-of-the-box software modules running on ISAC enable it to perform of a wide variety of system administration tasks including real-time fault recovery, root cause analyses, unauthorized software/task blocking and scheduled automation of preventative maintenance routines. Fully customizable, ISAC can be adapted to function in virtually any unique environment to ensure consistent performance and reliability.
Symbium also provides a standalone Management Console application that enables a central location to manage and report on groups of deployed ISACs. The software console can also integrate with traditional enterprise management consoles like HP OpenView and IBM Tivoli.
ISAC includes traditional remote server "lights out" control features such as host keyboard, video and mouse redirection over the network (KVM-over- IP), remote host power and reset controls, and remote software image booting. These features remove the need for and cost of additional remote management cards and external KVM-over-IP switches.
Customers are currently using Symbium's ISAC for such purposes as hardening host security by restricting what software is allowed to run on a server, storing a tamper-proof audit trail, and automatically resolving problems such as runaway processes or held-up print queues.
A customer of Symbium is Nerds-On-Site, an IT services company, with a network of over 600 independent franchises across six countries.
"We use Symbium's ISAC for a variety of reasons. ISAC's remote server control features like host KVM-over-IP redirection, host power controls and remote software image booting means we can do almost all of our work remotely." said James Keenleyside-Richter of the data center management team at Nerds-On-Site. "And by automating server management, it allows us to reduce firefighting and resolve problems in real-time, which means we can manage more servers, provide better service, and do it with the same headcount. Each time we have to manually solve a new problem, we can program ISAC to deal with it automatically should it ever happen again in the future."
Symbium's ISAC for Microsoft Windows servers is available today, while a version of the product for Linux servers currently in development.
Symbium ISAC pricing is based on a subscription of US$62/month/server including initial software management modules, warranty, customer support and product upgrades. Alternatively, Symbium also offers purchase and enterprise licensing terms.
Future add-on management modules will be available from third party software partners and Symbium.
