SurfControl Issues Warning to Parents on 'PodPorn'
10 January 2006 SCOTTS VALLEY, Calif., Jan. 9 -- SurfControl (LSE: SRF), the world leader in enterprise threat protection, today issued a warning to parents on the potential pornography threats attributed to what proved to be one of this season's most popular gifts -- the new video-enabled Apple(R) iPod(R) and Sony PSP(TM) (PlayStation Portable). While most parents realize that Internet pornography is a danger and have taken steps to protect their children, they are less aware of the ease with which sexually explicit content can be downloaded and viewed on the latest portable digital media players. This activity, already being referred to as "PodPorn" or "PornCasting," poses a particularly high risk to children. These same electronic gadgets that are used for downloading and viewing music videos can be easily be used to show-off pornographic clips, with sound and in full color.

What Parents Should Know
Unlike the personal computer (PC), very few Internet-based devices have integrated parental controls available to stop the viewing of unsavory content. Because of this, parents are encouraged to practice the same "safe surfing" measures used with their home computer.
Devices such as the video iPod obtain media directly from a PC. Anyone who can browse the Web can download pictures to their computer and upload them onto the iPod. With explicit video clips available free of charge in the form of iPod-friendly downloads, parents should be vigilant in tracking and controlling use of home computers accordingly. By keeping the computer in an easily accessible place, parents can keep a watchful eye over their child's online activity, monitoring Internet downloads in much the same way they would monitor where children are going and who they are talking to offline. Parents are also advised to take advantage of the technology available such as Web filtering software, which is specifically designed to help manage how, when and where children surf online - even when a parent can't be there.
Devices such as the PSP require even more diligent parental involvement. The PSP connects directly to the Internet, giving children easy access to the Web content of their choosing. In order to ensure that only appropriate material is being viewed on the device, kids should be educated about online behavior. Parents should also open the lines of communication, engaging in an ongoing dialogue with their children on the types of Internet content that they are accessing.
