Software breathes new life into instant messaging
8 December 2005Instant messaging is rapidly becoming one of the most widely used applications on the internet. A recent study found that 38 percent internet users are sending just as many, if not more, IMs than emails. The result is billions of instant messages being sent everyday as a quick alternative to email.
A variety of tools and addons for instant messaging have come about over the years. However, none are as clever and unique as Toonah (http://www.toonah.com). Toonah is a software program that will literally speak your IMs as they arrive. It works seamlessly with AIM, MSN Messenger, Yahoo, and ICQ. In addition, the program translates IM lingo. For instance, your computer will say “be right back” if someone sends you “brb.” The multimedia add-on becomes increasingly helpful as you have multiple IM windows open. Toonah recognizes this setup and will politely add intros, “joebob says”, if someone else talks to you that you haven’t been chatting with. The program is feature packed and there are just too many to list here. However, you can see a video presentation of how the program works here http://www.toonah.com/toonahtutorial.html
Our initial tests of the software showed it to be stable on many different versions of windows and it worked seamlessly with the different instant messaging applications we tested it with. Our staff also thoroughly enjoyed one particular feature: Secret Sounds. This feature allows you to send sounds in the form of “” to other Toonah users. I have to say that this feature created quite…um…interesting conversations. The use of the sounds seemed to be more and more creative from our staff members as the tests went on.
A recent interview with the founders of Toonah has shown that there is a growing demand for this program in a variety of different applications and industries. There have been reports that journalists are using the program to communicate verbally in places such as courtrooms where talking is forbidden. The program has also aided blind internet users in communicating through instant messaging.
While there are a variety of unique applications that Toonah can be adapted to, the program’s creators have focused on making IM just a little more fun. Based on our initial review of the software, I have to say, “Mission Accomplished.”
