SMART Board interactive whiteboards enable easy access to digital resources
20 March 2005SMART Technologies Inc. and ELECTROBOARD Pty Ltd, SMART’s distributor in Australia, announce the installation of SMART Board™ interactive whiteboards at ELTHAM College of Education to support the school’s Knowledge Network initiative. Knowledge Network is a system introduced at ELTHAM that encourages students to use technology as a tool for academic success.
One of the first schools in Victoria to use SMART Board interactive whiteboards, ELTHAM now uses interactive whiteboards in Year 7 and 8 classrooms to provide a state-of-the-art learning environment for its students. In addition to serving as a teaching tool, the SMART Board interactive whiteboards have played a particularly significant role in the school’s Knowledge Network programme. This initiative has developed a culture that promotes easy access to online information and greater collaboration with teachers. Simply by touching the SMART Board interactive whiteboard, students and teachers access digital resources to enhance classroom learning, helping students discover new ways to research the information they need. Teachers e-mail their lessons to students or post them on a website, along with notes made in digital ink while teaching, so students can access the lesson on their own time. The school also uses SMART’s Sympodium™ ID250 interactive pen displays in its lecture theatres and auditoriums for presentations to large groups.
“I first used interactive whiteboards in the UK several years ago and have found that they help students to develop a greater level of technical awareness and communicate key ideas quickly,” says Stuart King, English teacher at ELTHAM. “I can now rely on access to the Internet with students and can work on resources at home, e-mail them in, and show them to the whole class through the SMART Board interactive whiteboard – not much photocopying!”
“SMART Board interactive whiteboards are ideal for environments that encourage research- and enquiry-based learning,” says David Martin, SMART’s chairman and co-CEO. “ELTHAM College of Education has demonstrated a keen understanding of the positive impact SMART products have on student outcomes in the way it has integrated them into classroom teaching and learning.” Note: Until the PR department has formally issued this press release on www.smarttech.com, this information is for internal use only. About SMART Board interactive whiteboards The SMART Board interactive whiteboard is a large, touch-sensitive display. Connected to a computer and projector, the interactive whiteboard is like a giant computer screen that students and teachers simply touch to operate. Using their finger as a mouse, teachers and students can access and control any computer application, file or multimedia platform, including the Internet, CD-ROMs and DVDs. They can also write over applications in digital ink, then save their work for future study and review. The SMART Board interactive whiteboard engages students with diverse learning styles by providing both immediate access to a wide range of digital materials and a common focus for the entire class – not something easily achieved with other technologies. It is the number one choice among primary and secondary school educators in more than 75 countries worldwide because the pioneering software interface captures the imagination of students of all backgrounds and abilities in order to help them learn together, understand better and achieve more. About Sympodium ID250 interactive pen displays The Sympodium ID250 interactive pen display, with its flexible design and 15" ( 38.1-cm ) display, can be placed on top of a podium, desk or table so teachers can face their students while using the battery-free tethered pen to control computer applications, write over any application in digital ink and save work to a single file. The ID250 is the only interactive pen display that can connect directly to a projector and simultaneously display a computer image on its screen and a larger presentation screen for everyone to see. Unique pen-tool buttons make it easy for teachers to change pen colours or erase notes, and function buttons provide convenient access to features such as the on-screen keyboard, floating tools menu and screen capture tool. Notebook™ software, included free, allows users to save digital notes and screen captures of other applications or websites. Presenters can adjust the tilt stand for maximum comfort and rest their hand on the screen, without interference, while using the tethered pen to interact with digital material. The ID250 features all the interactive capabilities of the SMART Board interactive whiteboard, SMART’s flagship product. For more information, visit www.smarttech.com/id250.
