Pixel ads - fad or future?

30 January 2006

News Release

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

NZ/Pacific – Sunday29 January 2006

Pixel ads - fad or future?

Pixeladvertising may well have a similar impact to that of searchengine Google. Sound ambitious? Well Google took what wasa basically good existing idea and added value and for thatmatter so did Microsoft … the rest is history.

There is nodoubt the original UK pixel ad site, Million Dollar Homepage(www.milliondollarhomepage.com), was a great idea. Itsucceeded, say its commentators, because it was new, had anice human story behind it, and made use of some very goodmedia tactics. But surely there s more to it.

Copycatwebsites now abound but going by the commentary, they arereceiving a mixed response.

"The success of the originalUK site cannot be replicated," says Robyn Kamira creator ofNew Zealand based pixel ad site Dingdots (www.dingdots.com)."It was it s novelty that led to its success and pixeladvertising either has to grow beyond the novelty or fadeaway." She points to the hundreds of new pixel websiteswith large empty advertising spaces.

So what is the futureof pixel advertising?

"The idea of evolving an existingidea and improving it is what raises the bar and gives us abetter service or product. It s the backbone of business onthe Internet and everywhere else."

When people visit apixel advertising web site it has to offer something thatGoogle does not. "A well designed pixel website is like astroll through a shopping mall," says Ms Kamira.

"Ourcustomers browse at leisure without needing to figure outwhat search keywords to type in – it s like opening a box ofchocolates."

Pixel advertising lets companies buy pixelsto put their company image on. They buy as many pixels asthey like. Visitors to the site can browse and click on animage that takes them to that company s website.

Advertiser Denise Raymond from Creative Tourism NewZealand expects increased traffic and says Dingdots mosaicof website links is very appealing.

Rahera Smith, Directorof Japan-based Call of the Earth says, they are looking foralternative ways to boost website traffic to their site, andDingdots is an interesting way to advertise.

As well asmore visitors to their websites, advertisers expect to getbetter search engine rankings that will result in even morebusiness presence on the Internet.

"That should translateto dollars for advertisers and access to good deals forcustomers," says MsKamira.

TransTasman: Australian Racism Deeper Than Cronulla Riots - Scoop Report: Yasmine Ryan reports on her observations of Australia - In a quiet West Australian suburban town that I visited shortly before Christmas, residents were appalled by a particularly vicious and shocking incident. A local woman had returned to her home to find her Christmas lights savagely vandalised. Most had been stolen, and in a particularly callous act, her blow-up Santa had been brutally punctured. What kind of monster could do such a thing? they asked. Conversation was also dominated by anger at the growing 'politically-correct' aversion to Christmas. See... And the Mob Sang Waltzing Matilda
