Online Safety: Are Kids Safe on the Internet?
9 May 2006 New poll results show that the majority of parents (83 per cent) leave their child unmonitored while online and that already an alarming rate of kids younger than 13 have been bullied online (19 per cent), peer pressured to visit inappropriate Web sites (22 per cent) and have chatted with a stranger online (14 per cent). Are kids in more danger online than in the real world? Do parents really know what their children are doing on the Internet? How many kids have been cyber-bullied? And, what can parents do to protect their children online? Today, the third annual AOL Canada Online Safety Week kicks-off to raise awareness about Internet safety. Supported by Cybertip.ca and the Canadian Library Association, Online Safety week comprises a series of activities including new Canadian statistics that take a closer look at the dangers that exist when children are left unmonitored while online, a nationwide contest to promote online safety in schools, and the donation of KOL(TM) kids Internet service to selected public libraries across Canada.
