Online Dating Common, But Safety a Concern
14 March 2006 The Pew Internet & American Life Project has released a new survey about online dating. The upshot? Online romance is becoming more mainstream, with 31 percent of adult Americansathat's about 63 million peopleasaying they know someone who's used an online dating service, 26 percent saying they know someone who's gone on a date with a person he or she met through a dating site, and 15 percent saying they know someone who has either been in a long-term relationship or has married someone met via the Internet.
According to the survey, one in ten Internet users say they have personally used an online dating site.
However, concerns about the safety of posting personal information online and the trustworthiness of people encountered online remain near the forefront of American's thoughts about online dating. Fully two thirds of those surveyed agreed that online dating can be dangerous because it puts personal information out on the Internet, while only one quarter of those surveyed felt that online dating wasn't dangerous. The most wary respondents included female, elderly, and low-income Internet users.
Interestingly, respondents who have actually used online dating services are more convinced of their safety: while 47 percent think the activity involves some risk, 52 percent did not think the activity was dangerous. However, while only six percent felt dating sites do an "excellent" job of guarding users' personal information, nearly a third ( 32 percent ) felt they did a "good" job, while 12 percent felt they did a poor job of protecting personal information.
Distrust is also high: some 57 percent of all Internet users felt a lot of people who use online dating services lie about their marital status, and only a slight smaller percentage of online datersa52 percentaagreed that a lot of people are dishonest about being married.
Overall, general online users seem split over online dating: 44 percent agreed that Internet dating is a "good way to meet people," but the same percentage disagreed with the same statement.
