Microsoft Moves Into Hosting Blogs

Microsoft is venturing into new territory with the start of its new service for people who want to publish online web logs (known as "blogs").

All you need to stake your claim on a part of the Internet and begin "blogging" is a Hotmail or MSN Messenger account.

Then, says the software giant, go to the web site msnspaces.com and sign up for free.

The new site, which went online Thursday in a "beta" test version, allows you to write an online diary and share your thoughts, photographs, favorite songs -– just about anything -- with whomever happens to visit your page.

Blogging is not new. In fact, Microsoft is late to this game. Similar free sites already exist at Google's blogger.com and through America Online. Still, the site is another brick in Microsoft’s ever-expanding wall of Internet offerings.

While not everyone writes a blog –- only about two percent of us do, according to the Pew Internet Project -- 11 percent say they read the blogs of other people.
