Japans i-mode Internet mobile service to enter Russia

Japan's top mobile operator NTT DoCoMo (news - web sites) said it was launching its i-mode Internet service in Russia and three other former Soviet republics through an agreement with Russia's largest provider Mobile TeleSystems (MTS).


The i-mode technology allows mobile phone users to access e-mail, watch video clips and carry out online banking via their handsets.


The service will be introduced in Russia by December 2005. I-mode will also eventually enter Belarus, Ukraine and Uzbekistan through MTS's local subsidiaries.


"The experience of other European operators shows that i-mode provides for additional revenues," MTS president and chief executive officer Vassily Sidorov said Friday in an NTT DoCoMo statement.


Launched in February 1999, i-mode has 45 million subscribers in 10 countries of whom 42.6 million are in Japan.


In November, i-mode signed a deal with British operator mm02 to provide the service in Britain, Germany and Ireland.
