Intertex Launches the IX67
22 February 2005Intertex Data AB, manufacturer of SOHO firewalls with unique SIP capabilities, today announced the release of the IX67 firewall. The IX67 expands upon the capabilities of the predecessor IX66 with much higher capacity, extended functionality and several enhancements for SIP based IP Telephony. The IX67 is attractively priced and will fill both the data and IP telephony needs for the advanced home users, home workers and offices up to 50 persons.
The IX67 is a powerful firewall and NAT router that handles broadband and fixed Internet connections with bi-directional bandwidths over 20 Mbps and includes multiple routable Ethernet ports as well as hardware accelerated VPN capability. Several options are available: high speed 802.11g wireless access point, VPN including IPsec, L2TP and PPTP, SIP gateway to the telephone network, port for analogue telephone and the Intertex IP-PBX SIP Switch.
Like its predecessor, the IX67 has a unique and extensive SIP support. SIP is the Internet standard for live person-to-person communication that will create the next significant expansion of Internet usage after email and web surfing. IP telephony or VoIP is one usage of SIP. The IX67 comes with a built-in SIP proxy and registrar that can be used as a stand-alone SIP server and also allows SIP communication to traverse the firewall. Thus, all LAN users can safely communicate with other users in the open SIP world using voice, video, presence, instant messaging and more. With most other firewalls and NAT routers, SIP communication often rely on unreliable and insecure methods, if possible at all, often only connecting to some closed VoIP island. The IX67 handles more than 30 simultaneous external SIP telephone calls as well as many more internally on the LAN.
The IX67 can also include a gateway between SIP based IP telephony and the traditional telephony network via its FXO port. This gateway is useful for handling emergency "911" calls and it acts as local back up for the IP telephony as well as integrates calls received on the ordinary telephone line with the IP telephony system.
An FXS port allows analogue telephones to be connected and used as IP telephones. Such a telephone will work as a general SIP client, either using the built in SIP server or connecting to a service provider's SIP service. Thus, the IX67 also functions as an integrated access device (IAD) for VoIP access over broadband. Multiple SIP phones and soft PC SIP clients can also be connected to the LAN and become fully integrated with the SIP service.
With addition of the optional SIP Switch software, the IX67 becomes a complete telephony solution for the small office with unique functions and cost savings. The SIP Switch combines the best of traditional telephony, VoIP (Voice over IP) and live Internet communication and adds PBX functionality. The SIP Switch can connect to the ordinary telephone network via one or several available VoIP providers, allowing for drastically reduced long distance telephony costs.
The IX67 will start shipping in the North American market during March 2005 and will be available from the same channels as the IX66.
