Internet Offers Independent Artists New Avenues For Expression and Sales
27 January 2006 "I have absolutely no connections to the formal world of Fine Art," Kristen Fox admits. "I'm a self-taught artist specializing in Celtic-Inspired Art, which isn't exactly your classic still-life oil painting, and I don't know the first thing about preparing slides, applying for juried shows, gallery presentations, or getting an agent. But the internet has a way of leveling the playing field for people like me." Like many artists, Kristen has found her way to cafepress.com. She uploads the images made from her art, decides what products she wants to sell (framed prints, greeting cards, t-shirts, etc.), and cafepress takes the orders, prints and ships the products on-demand, and then sends Kristen her monthly commission checks. "It's so easy, and almost addictively fun, that I've also branched out into humorous, text-based designs and have an entire website dedicated to my rapidly growing inventory." Search engines like google.com and yahoo.com then index her shop and allow customers from all over the world to find her art, instead of it stacking up in a dark closet, gathering dust. Cafepress.com, and avenues with similar services such as zazzle.com and deviantart.com, have also opened doors for other not-so-traditional art forms such as Digital Art (art created with graphics programs on the computer), as well as the proliferation of digital photography and photomanipulation as accepted forms as well. And if you're more interested in selling your original, one of a kind paintings and hand-made jewelry than t-shirts and prints, or if you consider yourself more crafty than artsy, web sites like etsy.com, yessy.com, artbyus.com, and ebay.com offer valuable platforms and assistance for the independent artist as well, hosting virtual bazaars where buyers can spend hours browsing through all of the creative offerings. "It's a win-win situation," Kristen adds, "More art available in more forms than ever before means shoppers are more likely to find something that they really love, and can afford, and they can browse in their spare time, without ever having to leave the house - just like the artists!" To see the potential that the internet holds for selling your OWN artwork online, visit Kristen Fox's "Art of FoxVox - Celtic & Eclectic Designs" shop at http://www.artoffoxvox.com, and check out the many valuable website services mentioned in this article as well.
