Internet giants at work on digital video search engines
3 December 2004Google, Yahoo and Microsoft are each busy at work developing digital video search technologies, according to a report on tech news website CNET.
Quoting a collection of anonymous sources, the CNET article outlines for the first time what is known about the three giants of the internet are up to in the as-yet-largely-untapped market for digital video search.
Google is currently attempting to woo broadcasters and other digital video content creators with a multimedia search engine for internet-only video that the company hopes to deploy some time next year. Reportedly, Google is recording TV shows and indexing the programming’s closed captions for the deaf and hard of hearing, which potentially offers up the possibility of word-based search of not just the title of a clip, but keywords related to themes or occurances within the clip itself.
Microsoft, meanwhile, is developing video search technology that will allow users of a Windows Media Centre PC or TV connected to the internet to search for internet video, video-on-demand or items from broadcasters. The Microsoft technology will most likely be unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in January.
The article also reports that internet pioneer Yahoo is currently indexing video content already on the web and plans to introduce a web video search product sometime in the first quarter of next year.
