Bell warns about Internet diallers
25 November 2004Bell Canada has launched a campaign to educate Internet users on the risks associated with Internet diallers. This includes print and on-line advertising as well as a comprehensive on-line resource centre with security tips for consumers to protect themselves against Internet diallers.
Internet diallers can result in consumers accumulating unforeseen long-distance charges. Typically, when a consumer visits these web sites a pop-up window or other form of notice appears, asking for agreement to certain conditions before proceeding. If the user agrees, an Internet dialler is activated on the computer, connecting their phone line to an international destination and generating long-distance charges.
Bell's campaign includes print and on-line advertising; new on-line resource centre with security tips, and blocking direct dial to countries with significant traffic
associated with Internet diallers.
Bell Canada's telecommunications partners NorthernTel, Télébec and Aliant are also committed to safeguarding customers against Internet diallers in their respective regions.
