Earthwatch Selects Kintera to Enhance Online Presence and Expand Reach
26 January 2005Kintera's web management, accounting, marketing and fundraising tools bring the unique Earthwatch Institute volunteer engagement model to the world
Earthwatch Institute (www.earthwatch.org) announced today that it has signed an eight-year agreement with Kintera(R) Inc. (Nasdaq:KNTA) to enhance and enrich the nonprofit's interactive website and supporting technology. Earthwatch, an international organization that offers the public opportunities to work alongside leading field scientists and researchers, plans to strategically implement Kintera's technology to bring the group's unique, one-of-the kind engagement model to the world.
Earthwatch Institute selected Kintera because of the proven capabilities of Kintera Sphere(TM), an enterprise-grade software system that provides contact relationship management (CRM), a web content management system (CMS), eMarketing, accounting and other applications designed for the nonprofit community. Knowing the reputation and reliability of Kintera made the organization's decision to sign a long-term contract much easier. Earthwatch was also a customer of American Fundware, developers of FundWare(R) accounting solutions and a recent Kintera acquisition.
"To accomplish our mission and better serve our thousands of Earthwatch volunteers, we have to trust our technology," said John Walker, CFO and vice president of finance at Earthwatch. "Kintera Sphere provides the array of online tools we need, all in one easy-to-use system."
Kintera, a leading provider of "software as a service" to the nonprofit and government sectors, is helping Earthwatch build one of the largest international online communities of volunteers. The organization engages people worldwide in scientific research, conservation and education and has offices in England, Australia, Japan and the United States.
Until now, each Earthwatch Institute office managed a separate database containing supporter information. To allow the offices to communicate and share information more effectively, the Kintera Sphere unified platform is being used to migrate all of the global nonprofit's information into one streamlined database. The new database will use Kintera's CRM tools to collect, analyze and utilize data from the organization's more than 50,000 members and supporters to drive fundraising efforts and deliver targeted communications and programs.
To augment Earthwatch's ability to communicate online with supporters throughout the world, Kintera is restructuring and rebranding the organization's existing international website. The new infrastructure, built on Kintera Sphere, will feature CMS technology to link separate "sitelets" for each office. Each office website will contain interactive functionality, added content, membership areas, a secure donation page accepting local currencies, robust reporting capabilities, Kintera FundWare accounting functionality and much more.
Earthwatch Institute will also use Kintera's web-based software to build a website dedicated solely to providing information on the various expeditions. Visitors will be able to choose from a variety of experiences ranging from conducting research on ecosystem conservation in the Pantanal to documenting the architecture, history and folklore of a traditional Chinese village. Supporters will not only be able to register, but also utilize Kintera's Friends Asking Friends(R) fundraising program to send emails to friends and family members offering information about their upcoming expedition and asking for financial support to attend.
"Earthwatch Institute supporters don't just donate to this organization -- they get involved," said Kintera's CEO Harry Gruber, M.D. "We're pleased that Earthwatch selected Kintera's Internet technology and services to help the organization communicate with their global offices and engage thousands of volunteers more effectively and efficiently online."
