DSL Internet service grows
17 December 2004By Matt Ollwerther Marshfield News-Herald Jeremy Lezotte said he wants a broadband connection at home, but can't justify the price.
"They just want too much for it," he said, explaining he uses the faster Internet connection at work and doesn't have much patience for his slower home dial-up connection.
"I just suffer with dial-up at home," said Lezotte, a computer technician at PC Doctors in Marshfield.
But broadband DSL service is increasingly available in Spencer, Loyal, Stratford, Colby, Owen, Unity, Edgar, Athens, Marathon City and Abbotsford.
Two versions of DSL will be offered by Verizon at discounted rates when purchased for one year or with local and long-distance phone service. For $29.95 a month, customers buy a download speed of 1.5 megabits a second. For an additional $10 a month, the speed of the connection is increased to download at 3 megabits a second.
Verizon would not provide state-specific counts of DSL users, but spokesman Bill Kula said nationally the company provides DSL service to about 3.3 million customers. The majority of PC Doctors' calls about DSL come a few months after customers install their hardware and are hit by spyware or viruses, Lezotte said. Rather than calling the provider's customer service, many people will call PC Doctors, which makes house calls.
Broadband has brought demand for the set up of in-house networking, or linking multiple computers to one high-speed connection, he said.
DSL is advantageous for more rural areas because everyone has a phone line but not necessarily cable, he said. Through the mail, customers receive DSL hardware, such as the modem, and software from the provider, such as Verizon.
The assumption that DSL can't reach more rural locations is a myth, he said. About 80 percent of the nation's phone lines now are capable of DSL.
"Increasingly, people are using a DSL connection or a cable modem to avoid the sluggish download of video clips or large files that just five years ago would have taken a long time to appear on your screen," he said.
