Canadian invents Internet-based satellite application
3 December 2004A CANADIAN engineer from York University in Toronto unveiled an Internet-based satellite mapping technology that enables users to visually zoom in or fly over any place in the planet in real time. Vincent Tao, chair of Canada’s Geomatics research and engineering center, created the “Same Anywhere, Map Everywhere” (SAME) solution that can produce vivid images of objects within a particular geographic area.
The technology was unveiled recently during the Partnership Group of Science and Engineering (PAGSE) symposium in Canada. The discussions on SAME could be viewed in PAGSE’s website (www.pagse.org).
SAME combines existing geographical information mapping and Internet search engine technologies. It works by taking satellite images of the Earth and combining them with real-time remote sensors that monitor traffic and weather. The collected information is formatted into an Internet search engine that can capture images of the Earth with little or no noticeable lag.
SAME is so accurate that coordinates typed into the search engine can identify objects within the area, like cars and their make.
Tao said SAME’s practical applications include surveillance and mapping of critical infrastructure for defense, emergency and response, environmental monitoring, telecommunications and urban planning.
On the consumer side, Tao said SAME will more likely be used for dashboard-mounted map navigation systems in vehicles.
“Visualize that technology employed in the near future on a global scale where sensors monitoring traffic, weather, water and seismic variations are all connected to a central processor. It would provide an unparalleled opportunity to use that data for disaster preparedness and relief,” Tao said.
