Box.net Launches Filefeed, an RSS File Sharing Service for Box.net Online Storage Members

20 July 2005

Box.net, the online file storage and sharing company, introduces Filefeed, a service that provides an RSS (Really Simple Syndication) feed for shared files in any Box.net account. With RSS file-sharing, Box.net subscribers will be able to share documents, audio files, and even home movies with friends, family and coworkers in an easy-to-use format. Box.net members will be able to automatically syndicate files over the Internet via RSS.

Box.net is applying RSS technology to a full range of file and data formats, which will help customers share important information and media. Members can upload any type of file to Box.net's secure servers, then instantly share that file or folder with friends, family, and co-workers through a unique RSS feed. Box.net users provide an RSS Web address to their contacts, which can be added to MyYahoo, MyMSN, Bloglines, or any similar service with syndication and feed aggregation capabilities. New files are automatically added to the feed, updating the RSS subscriber with the most recently shared files.

“Box.net is not just about online file storage and backup, but about making file access easy across groups of people,” said Aaron Levie, President, Box.net, Inc. “As part of the RSS feeds for Box.net, we will also launch Filefeed.net, an RSS reader specifically designed to aggregate data feeds.”

With the opportunities presented by file sharing and syndication, Box.net is working to solve common problems that the average consumer might have with traditional methods of sharing data over the Internet. With an RSS feed of shared files, workgroups can instantaneously be kept up-to-date on document changes, schools can update parents and students on the most recent assignments, and families can share full-sized photos and video clips of baby's first steps.

“We're seeing more and more opportunities for RSS to simplify personal and group file sharing,” added Dylan Smith, marketing director, Box.net. “One of our goals is to be the most dynamic and easy-to-use storage and sharing company out there. The Box.net RSS feeds and Filefeed.net are part of that goal.”

Box.net is an easy-to-use online file storage service, offering both monthly and yearly storage plans, starting at just $2.99 per month for 1 Gigabyte of storage. Box.net members can choose to share certain folders and files – make them public – which can then be viewed and used by whomever the files are shared with. Box.net does not limit users' incoming or outgoing bandwidth.
