Aruba Networks Extends Mobile Edge Portfolio with Products for Branch Office and Retail Environments

17 January 2006

Retail's Big Show -- Aruba Networks, the Mobile Edge Company, today announced the Aruba 200 Mobility Controller and Aruba Mobility Management System to address the specific wireless, mobility, and security needs of branch office and retail store environments. These products are designed for deployments comprising a number of modestly-sized, dispersed WLANs securely interconnected and managed from a central operations center. The Aruba 200 provides integrated mobility, security and convergence services for both wired and wireless users, and the Aruba Mobility Management System offers system-wide visibility of not only wireless network infrastructure and devices, but individual users as well.

Aruba's new mobile edge products address key challenges in branch office deployments. Increasingly, branch offices require network services beyond basic IP routing and firewalls, including wireless, intrusion prevention, site-to-site VPNs, identity-based management and voice. The result is a rising number of boxes, provisioning challenges, and management troubles. The Aruba 200 simplifies branch deployments with integrated services and automatic configuration, while the Mobility Management System provides a centralized management view of a confederation of branch offices.

In addition to branch offices, the Aruba 200 and Mobility Management System are ideally suited for use in retail store deployments where wireless capabilities and specialized applications can significantly improve revenues, profitability, and customer satisfaction. These applications include mobile point-of-sale with secure credit card transactions, inventory management in warehouses and retail spaces, information kiosks, pricing and auditing, guest Internet access, Voice over WLAN (VoWLAN), streaming video, and RFID asset tracking.

"One of the primary difficulties in deploying WLAN technology in branch offices and retail stores is the lack of onsite IT expertise to manage the network," stated Joel Conover, principal analyst for enterprise infrastructure at Current Analysis. "In order to be successful, branch and retail WLAN solutions must deliver several capabilities; strong centralized management, wide-ranging integrated functionality for security and voice, a highly reliable implementation, and competitive pricing for cost-effective deployment to a large number of sites. Aruba's new additions to the Mobile Edge portfolio meet all of these needs."

The Aruba 200 Mobility Controller and Mobility Management System represent an extension to Aruba's Mobile Edge architecture, which delivers seamless user mobility across the LAN, WAN, and Internet; unified security for wired, wireless, and remote access; high quality voice support; and investment protection for the existing infrastructure. Aruba's Mobile Edge architecture enables secure enterprise WLANs to scale to levels previously infeasible.

Integrated Mobility, Security, and Convergence for Branch Office and Retail Locations

The Aruba 200 Mobility Controller delivers integrated mobility, security and convergence services for both wired and wireless users in branch offices, retail stores, and small business environments.

With two ports supporting up to six APs and 100 simultaneous users, the Aruba 200 is built on the same advanced architecture as Aruba's other award- winning mobility controllers, with a built-in policy enforcement firewall and support for the full suite of ArubaOS mobility software. Consequently, the Aruba 200 can serve as a single integrated appliance for identity-based security, role-based access control, endpoint integrity enforcement, and safe guest-user access.

Advanced network services, including EAP offload and DHCP, eliminate the need for separate AAA and DHCP servers, enabling uninterrupted network operations. This is critical so the branch office or retail LAN continues to function even if the WAN link to the headquarters site should fail.

The Aruba 200 also provides enterprise-class wireless LAN services, including support for high quality and secure mobile Voice over IP (VoIP) with advanced features such as Call Admission Control (CAC), voice-aware RF management, and strict over-the-air QoS, even for multifunction (i.e., combined data and voice) clients.

"The retail industry is increasingly turning to technology for both top- and bottom-line improvements in their business, rolling out applications for inventory management, marketing, customer service and more. However, the foundation for all of these applications needs to be a solid, secure networking infrastructure. Until today, retail had nowhere to turn for wireless networking that met its requirements," stated Don LeBeau, Aruba's president and CEO. "Aruba's new Mobile Edge solutions for retail and branch offices provide all of the elements necessary for an expansive wireless enterprise network-feature-rich intelligent controllers, high-quality, low cost APs, and an overarching management system that delivers centralized control over hundreds of WLANs."

Simplified Monitoring and Management of Large-Scale, Distributed WLANs

As wireless enterprise networks grow to include hundreds of mobility controllers and thousands of APs spanning the LAN, WAN, and Internet, more sophisticated management becomes critical. The Aruba Mobility Management System provides a comprehensive suite of applications for planning, monitoring, fault management, reporting, and RF coverage and location visualization across the entire mobility infrastructure. Complementary to the multi-controller management capabilities already built into Aruba's mobility controllers, the Mobility Management System reduces total cost of ownership by automatically discovering and monitoring all controllers, APs, and users simultaneously, allowing them to be easily managed from a single network operations center.

Aruba's Mobility Management Systems leverage the mobility controllers' integrated policy enforcement firewall to enable a user-centric management model. This allows IT administrators to rapidly scope and visualize all objects related to any given network user, drastically reducing troubleshooting and repair times. The Mobility Management System also includes a built-in location Application Programming Interface (API) that permits external systems to query the current and historical physical location of any WLAN device.

Pricing and Availability

The new additions to Aruba's Mobile Edge portfolio are available now. The Aruba 200 Mobility Controller starts at $1,750 U.S. list price. The Mobility Management System starts at $3,995 U.S. list price.
