Amnesty International USA Advocacy Director for Asia T. Kumar will testify at tomorrow's Congressional Human Rights Caucus Members' Briefing on human rights and the Internet in the People's Republic of China. He will serve as an expert witness concerning recent incidents of U.S. Internet companies ignoring human rights norms in their efforts to penetrate the lucrative Chinese Web markets.
Four major Internet companies were invited to testify. Google, Microsoft and Cisco have all declined to send representatives to the hearing. Yahoo has yet to respond.
"Amnesty International has been reporting on this issue since 1999 and has seen no let-up in the Chinese government's crackdown on peaceful Internet users," Kumar plans to testify. "This is another instance of the Chinese practice of silencing political dissidents and others who express their views peacefully.
"The Chinese government's abuse of its citizens is nothing new, as Amnesty has documented. What is new is U.S.-based corporations facilitating the Chinese government's human rights violations. The business community uses double standards in its dealings with China. Internet companies must be held to account for this practice."
